Laptop Keyboard Repair

Laptop keyboard repairs are very common and somewhat easy to do. Of course repairing or replacing your laptop keyboard depends on why your laptop keyboard is not working to begin with. Perhaps the keys fell off, there is no connection when a key is pressed or maybe your Caffè Latte just spilled all over your keyboard. Of course some issues are easier than others and reality is that a liquid spill of something that contains sugar (soda, beer, your Caffè Latte) will more often than not result in you having to replace the keyboard all together as well as clean your laptop inside and out.

Laptop Keyboard Repair Difficulty

If your problem is broken off keys then this could be a rather difficult to repair. A key works by pressing the key which is connected by a spring to a sensor which once pressed comes in contact with the sensor that is just below the specific key thereby the typed letter represented by the key appears on the screen. These keys sit on delicate mounting arms held in place with very fragile clips and are easily broken. It’s best to leave this to an experienced computer technician.

Laptop Keyboard Repair Issues

Perhaps your keyboard keys are sticking because there is dust and debris between or underneath them. The easiest way to fix this is first by shutting down your system and unplugging it or removing the battery. Turn your laptop over and very gently tap on the bottom of the case. This will loosen anything that may be preventing your keyboard keys from working properly. Then turn it right side up again, spray the keys with a can of compressed air making sure to blow between the keys and not too closely. If using a can of compressed air you will not want to shake the can because this will cause you to get a wet spray instead of just air.

Laptop Keyboard Repair Problems

If your problem is a water spill, the first thing you need to do is shut off your computer immediately before it shorts out. It’s risky but you can turn it upside down to drain but do not shake it around. Let it drip dry for a while, turn it right-side up again and use a hairdryer set on “cool” to further dry it out. If you use a “heat” setting on your hairdryer then you risk melting the keys or the sensors, so make sure it’s set to cool. Do not turn your computer back on for several days or until you are absolutely certain it has dried out completely. At this point you can power it back on and see if it works. As we mentioned earlier, any liquid spill containing sugar (beer, wine, soda etc.) is bad news and more cleaning by a professional will be required since the laptop must be taken apart. So, in the event of a spill don’t panic, turn it off, be very careful turning it upside down since water in the area of the CDROM drive may be less damaging than water in the area of the motherboard, never use “heat” to dry it out and have it serviced by a professional.
